Codex Automation & CI/CD
Codex can help with recurring work, non-interactive scripts, and CI/CD tasks.
1. Desktop App Automations
Automations run recurring or monitored tasks from the app.
Creation Methods
Create automations from the app UI, from a thread, or through supported automation tools.
Two Types
Common patterns are scheduled tasks and monitors that wake when something changes.
Git Repository Location
Automations that modify code should run in a Git repository with clear branch and commit behavior.
Schedule
Use schedules for routine checks, dependency reviews, summaries, or recurring reports.
Model And Permissions
Choose conservative permissions for recurring work. Automation should not need broad access unless the task demands it.
Preflight Checklist
Before enabling automation, verify the prompt, permissions, branch behavior, and expected output.
2. Non-Interactive codex exec
codex exec runs a task without the interactive TUI and is useful for scripts or CI.
3. CI/CD Example
CI tasks can ask Codex to generate release notes, summarize failures, or prepare review comments. Keep credentials and deployment actions tightly controlled.
4. Relationship To Cloud / @codex
Cloud and @codex workflows are useful for issue-driven or PR-driven background work, while local automation is better when local context is required.
